He was a supporter of Translyvania University, the Lexington Athanaeum, and the Episcopal Church; and was keenly interested in geology and other natural sciences. In World War I, she was chairman of home economics in the U.S. Food Administration, headed by Herbert Hoover, and she was in demand as a lecturer and consultant in Europe, India, and China as well as America.
